Begin with the audience
Describe the person who needs to understand the brand and the situation in which they encounter it. A fast shelf decision asks different things from a service conversation.
Write down the questions that person brings. Personality should help answer them with the right tone, rather than distract from the task.
Choose useful tensions
Pair a quality with a boundary: playful but clear, confident but welcoming, detailed but approachable. The boundary makes the quality useful when judging design.
Test each pair against actual content. If it only works in a slogan, it may not yet describe a practical voice.
Put the idea into an application
A package label, booking explanation or short service introduction can reveal whether a personality works. Compare the options with the agreed brief, not only personal taste.
Record the decisions in plain language. The next person using the identity should understand why a mark, colour or sentence belongs.
